I just spent two hours searching my house for a book I bought several years ago when I was dreaming of building a cabin in the woods. I never did find it, but I found a million other things that have been missing. Of course, I wasn’t particularly interested in finding them anymore. (more…)

Sometimes it takes a man and tools to cut the cake

My son William requested an ice cream cake from Coldstone Creamery for his birthday.  I followed instructions and took the cake out 15 minutes before I was planning to serve. By then, the ice cream on the outside was beginning to melt so I began to carve.   I carved and pounded but it remained hard as a glacier.

William came in the kitchen to see what was taking so long.  Our guests started getting a little nervous when he went to my tool box and withdrew a hammer and chisel to give me a hand to cut the cake.  They began worrying about their teeth, I expect.

My new roommate, Clint, brought his kitty over when he moved in with me. In case you missed the preface to this scenario, he is a tenant of mine whose apartment flooded. He moved in with me last Monday and we’ve co-existed - very comfortably I think - for the past six days. I will miss him when he’s gone. (more…)

Cow chow makes a nice centerpiece

As I walked Rebel and Lucky Dawg through the countryside today, I had a stroke of genius. (That’s very rare, and usually these strokes backfire in the end.)

But I was mulling over how to create a clever centerpiece for my Dad’s retirement party on Sunday. I had borrowed an old doctor’s bag from a local physician and was planning to purchase some flowers to fill it up.

Suddenly I looked up from my reverie and saw Lucky Dawg chase a rabbit into a spectacular field of milo. It was reaching maturity, and in the setting sun the field glowed in shades of amber and celedon (that’s rust and green in layman’s terms.) (more…)
