Fig pickin’ time in Mississippi

I’m not really crazy about figs, but my friend has a huge fig tree in his back yard and he invited Marie and Judy and me to come over and do some pickin’ after mass tomorrow.

Since I’m hot for anything free, I guess we will do some pickin’ even though we will melt in the heat which is predicted to be 100 plus – REAL temp. Besides one fig has only 37 calories and they are so sweet!  But they also have 10 carbs per fig and I’m watching carbs these days.  I might as well have a bag of M & Ms.

My herb garden runneth over

Other than make up a few batches of pesto, I really haven’t done much but admire the fragrant plants in my little herb garden.

This year I added lemon balm, although I had no idea what to do with it.  It looks alot like mint. I did rub some leaves on my stray cat because I heard the oils repel fleas and such.

My cherry tomatoes are producing at the speed of light – I pick about two cups every other day.  I found a wonderful way to treat these little jewels and even save some for the lean winter months.

Potager yields first fruit

I picked my first vine ripened tomatoes this morning and have a truck load coming on in my potager.  That’s just a fancy French name for a flower garden and vegetable garden planted together- the way they do in Europe.

Hydrangea heaven

Shirley, my personal Garden Mama, had the lunch bunch over today to witness nature in its finest hour.

Her hydrangeas are putting on a show this year like never before– she’s not sure why, but who cares.  We were just happy to be spectators in the parade of color.
