Early Light: It’s Senior Citizen Day-blow some bubbles

bubbles

Today is Thursday, August 21, 2008. This is the 234th day of the year with only 132 remaining until the new year. There’s still time to accomplish all those lofty goals you set on New Year’s Day, but it’s crunch time.

Today is officially Senior Citizen Day as declared by President Ronald Reagan and adopted in 1988. But I’m not sure what that means. Are we to honor those kids who are in their senior years of high school or college - or our elders?

I referred to Wikipedia which describes senior citizens as those “nearing or surpassing the average life span of human beings, and thus the end of the human life cycle.” Whew. I’m don’t think I’m there yet but I still qualify for that cheap coffee at McDonalds.

Besides, “average life span” is increasing all the time. What was once considered a senior citizen can practically be middle aged these days. (I’m an eternal optimist.)

Euphemisms and terms for old people include seniors — chiefly an American usage — or elderly. As occurs with almost any definable group of humanity, some people will hold a prejudice against others — in this case, against old people. This is one form of ageism.” For shame.

My advice for those fearing they have reached senior citizendome is - go to the Dollar Tree and buy a few bottles of those bubbles and blow it out like you did when you were five and it was your birthday party. That always works for me.

I don’t think they’re talking about us, after all we are only 50-11 and aren’t
close to being near the end of human life cycle. We can still enjoy blowing
    bubbles!

Thanks Norma. I was afraid I was a tightwad AND a senior citizen. I’ll settle for being a tightwad!

I’ve bought a bubble machine that I crank up as often as possible!
It makes thousands of bubbles with no effort on my part! (bettery powered) The grandchildren think it is for them, but we won’t tell them who it is really for!!!

You’re not kidding are you?! Can you bring it to our next girl’s night out? Can you send a photo next time you crank it up? And let me know where to buy one!

Bought mine in the toy department of Target’s…but Walmart has them, too, I am sure.
