I’m in a hurry and I don’t know why

rushing

There’s a song that plays on the intercom at all the MSU baseball games by the musical group “Alabama.”  It goes like this: “I’m in a hurry to get things done. I rush and rush until life’s no fun. All I really gotta do is live and die. But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.”

What a great lesson to us type A humans who rush around, growing impatient when things don’t get out of our way.  I still play the hurry up and wait game almost every day even those “I’m Retard” as they say in my part of the world.

running Faster, faster…it’s the pounding beat of the 21st century culture and likely the story of your life.  We live in a hectic world where the pressure to do things and multitask is paramount.  As I write this, I’m cooking breakfast, watering the garden, running the dishwasher, and watching the news – my house is a hotbed of frenetic activity.

And get this, I just read in “Living Well” magazine that all this urgency causes a need for an outlet or tranquilizer which many find in food.  Ergo – weight gain!  Yikes.  Plus if you’re like me, I want to lose 10 pounds in three days and grow disenchanted with the process when I fail at this mission impossible.

I guess Mother was right “Haste makes waste,” or should we say “haste makes waist!?”

All this rushing also increases your risk of having accidents.  I wear bruises on my arms and legs like some people wear tattoos – if I were married, you would think I was a battered woman on some days.  And I have a permanent scar on my arm  from brushing it on the top of the oven which I’m rushing to pull out some burning concoction.

The solution?  I don’t have a clue, but the magazine article suggests that visual chaos (a messy desk or kitchen) can exacerbate the anxiety and cause more impatience and frustration.  So, altogether now, join me in the rest of the song….

Don’t know why I have to drive so fast
My car has nothing to prove.
It’s not new
But it’ll do zero to sixty in five point two.
I’m in a hurry to get things done.
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun.
All I really gotta do is live and die.
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.
Can’t be late, I leave in plenty of time
Shaking hands with the clock.
I can’t stop.
I’m on a roll and I’m ready to rock.
I’m in a hurry to get things done.
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun.
All I really gotta do is live and die.
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why
Oh, I hear a voice
That says I’m running behind
Better pick up my pace
It’s a race and there ain’t no room for someone in second place
I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why
