Looking for a new sweet potato recipe

pac pab No one in my family cares for sweet potatoes very much.  But for the sake of tradition we keep serving them year after year and end up feeding them to the garbage disposal. vegan-sweet-potato-pie Does anyone out there have a new way to cook sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving?  I’d love a new idea.  Anything but the ole “boil to death and smother in brown sugar and butter?” Been there, done that.  And in my humble opinion, marshmallows should be banned from the Thanksgiving table.  Wonder who started that tradition?   The other thing my family never touches is cranberry sauce – maybe because they always come out of a can and have that tale-tell ridge on the slices.  New ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Last year I did a jalapeno-cranberry relish and I saw one member of my family picking out all the jalapenos.

  1. Emily, in lieu of cranberry relish, I have made a congealed cranberry salad so many years, it has become a family tradition.

    1 1/4 cups boiling water
    2 3-oz packages black cherry jello
    1 can WHOLE cranberry sauce
    1 #300 can crushed pineapple with juice
    11 oz can mandarin oranges drained
    1 cup chopped pecans
    Mix jello and water and add cranberry sauce while water is hot so it will melt the sauce. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into mold and refrigerate.
    I mix 1 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/3 cup orange marmalade and serve a dollop on each salad serving.

  2. Hey – I like that idea. I’ll have to go borrow a mold from Brenda. I’ve learned that she has every gadget known to man so there’s no need for me to go buy anything. Interesting sauce too. Thanks much. So do you do with sweet potato with sugar and marshmallows like 90 percent of the world?

  3. I am one of a very small group who does not eat sweet potatoes. I think, if that was the last food left on earth, I would starve. lol. The lady who cooks for us makes candied sweet potatoes that the rest of my family loves.
    The topping for the salad is good on most fruit based salads. I especially like it on this recipe since the recipe calls for mandarin oranges.

  4. Emily, I make baked, then mashed sweet potatoes just like “white” ones with butter, salt, pepper and just a dash of cinnamon and everyone eats them! No sugary stuff they are already sweet. I’ll send Sharkey 3’s recipe for cranberry sauce. It’s easy and really tasty. I in Chicago at the airport at the moment.

  5. Diva, Like Yvonne, I mash and add butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and Crown Royal and bake in the oven for 25 minutes — have only found teatotalers are averse to the “drunk” sweet potatoes.
