- Today Gordon Hazard and Tom Braddock celebrated their mutual birthdays at my house. For 60 years, they’ve been celebrating this date together, but today may have been the most memorable – at least for those of us who love them.
- As a bonus, their contemporary, John Robert Arnold, age 89 at left, stopped by and entertained us with more stories and a few little known verses from familiar songs. I suspect he made them up.
Of course, the women who have kept these men out of trouble for so many years were here. Above, Martha Braddock, Sara Hazard, and Pat Pate, Daddy’s faithful assistant, joined in the celebration.
I took notes and found out so many secrets long covered up. About the OkeDoke Inn from the 1930s and The Blue Room which operated in the vicinity of Gordon’s old veterinary clinic.
I heard about The Stardust Terrace, the Golden Gate and the Wagon Wheel just across from the the Indian Mount on Highway 45. I learned that a major magazine rated West Point as Numero Uno in wild Honky Tonks between Chicago and Mobile back in the 30s.
What? My wholesome Land of Oz? West Point, Mississippi, the center of my universe had some unsavory businesses? Nah. Can’t be.
