Prairie Arts - 30 years and counting

A hugely anticipated annual event in Mississippi is the Prairie Arts Festival - held in my hometown of West Point. The Festival is held each year

Prairie Arts Festival - August 30, 2008

on the Saturday before Labor Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - in West Point’s downtown area That means this year it will be on August 30.

Not only will you get to experience the best in fine arts, hand-made crafts, down-home southern cooking, four stages of live music, Classic Cars, Kidsville, and much more, the Prairie Arts Festival features more than 600 exhibitors selling everything from handmade jewelry to garden art. This year, the festival will run one hour longer than in the past, concluding at 5 p.m.

An annual tradition since 1978, the festival has been recognized, for the twelfth straight year, as one of the top ten events in the south. It is one of the largest arts and crafts festivals in the country, attracting crowds of more than 40,000.

My parents live in the heart of the festival venue so I’ll be taking a time out now and then to sneak away and rock on their front porch. I’m supposed to be “working” the festival, thanks to my persuasive friend Ruthie who is in charge of enlisting support from hundreds of volunteers. She’ll know where I’m hiding out and come drag me back when she needs me.

The show will go on rain or shine, so come join us if you’re in the neighborhood. Bring your best “funeral home fan.” You’ll need it.

Good article — you know you love working and we always have lots of fun. Also, we have lots of fans to give away!! See you then.

I do love working the festival. Note that I quit calling you “bossy” and from now on will call you “persuasive.” You like?

Marie and I are coming over together and meeting Norma at your place. We’ll take one car and park at Daddy’s. Can’t wait. Hope this “cool” weather (90 degrees instead of 100) holds out.

Oh, and I’ll need a fan for both hands.

I plan on being there, too! See you all around 1:00!
Aren’t we glad that the rain came this weekend!
