Those were the days my friend

On this date in l956, Elvis Presley made his first appearance on national television.

No it wasn’t Ed Sullivan, or some teenage dance show.  It was on the Dorsey Brothers Show starring Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey of the Big Band era.  Elvis was backed by the instruments of the Dorsey band, believe it or not.

And the nation watched, horrified

On this day in 1986,  73 seconds after launch from Cape Canaveral, the space Shuttle Challenger exploded, killing seven astronauts. I remember it well.  I was working in my office in Jackson and my suite mate came running in the gave me the horrible news.

After a flawless liftoff, the Challenger, traveling at a speed of 2900 feet per second, soared nine miles into space when suddenly the ship’s liquid hydrogen tank exploded. Millions watched the tragedy unfold on TV. This catastrophe took the lives of Commanders Francis ‘Dick’ Scobee and Michael J. Smith, Dr. Judith A. Resnik, Dr. Ronald E. McNair, Lt. Colonel Ellison S. Onizuka, Gregory B. Jarvis and school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

  1. The Challenger explosion is one of those events that you will always remember where you were when you heard of it. I was working a job fair here in Dallas and one of the other companies had a TV at thier booth- there were hundreds of us standing around watching it over and over with tears streaming down our faces. Hard to believe it was 22 years ago!
