What’s a body to do?


I’ve never been a big vegetable lover – unless they are covered with cheese and cream of mushroom soup and topped with buttery cracker crumbs.  Therefore, I count on getting my nutrition from a pill – lots of them. Vitamin C in place of fruit and Calcium in place of milk.

But hold on! Here’s a shocker: Taking calcium supplements doubles the


risk of heart attacks, according to a new study by Swiss scientists.  I guess our bones will turn to rubber, but our hearts will be healthy if I stop taking calcium.

Even multivitamins taken daily may be dangerous to your health.

In 2007, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a paper titled, “Mortality in Randomized Trials of Antioxidant Supplements for Primary and Secondary Prevention.” Medical researchers wanted to see what all those pills with antioxidants were doing to us. They looked at 68 randomized trials with 232,606 participants. What they found was that people who took the antioxidant supplements, beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E experienced greater mortality than people who took a placebo.

Simply put, people who took antioxidant supplements died sooner than people who didn’t. Dozens of studies still show that eating foods high in antioxidants are good for you, but getting antioxidants in pill form is dangerous?  Now what?

The list of things we have been taking to be healthy may be doing the exact opposite.  Some might be taking us right up to deaths’ door.

So what can we do about it? It always comes down to the same thing folks — a balanced diet! You have to rely on your diet for calcium and other nutrients — not circus tricks or magic pills.  Bad news for me.  I do like tomatoes – I think it’s both a vegetable AND a fruit.  My philosophy is “a tomato a day keeps the doctor away.”
