I have my granddogs here this week, and to keep them occupied, I made home-made dog bones this morning.
They were pretty impressed and waited patiently while I measured, mixed, rolled and baked the treats. I cut some into Christmas trees, others into stars, and of course, the traditional dog bones.
Never mind that I haven’t finished cooking for my human guests. I think the animals appreciate my culinary talents way more than most people! Here’s the recipe in case you want to impress your canine friends:
2-1/4 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 beef bouillon cube dissolved in 1/2 cup hot water
1 T. firmly packed brown sugar
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients, stirring until well blended. Knead dough 2 minutes. On e floured surface, use a floured rolling pin to roll out dough to 1/4 inches. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Bake 30 minutes on an ungreased baking sheet. Remove from pan and cool on wire rack Store in an airtight container. Makes about 4 dozen.
P. S. My friend Ruthie lost her grand-dog yesterday and her own pup not so long ago. I’m so sorry, JC and Ruthie. I’m thinking about you.
