New sign of a stroke – stick out your tongue

If you see me walking around with a big goon-like grin on my face and frequently sticking out my tongue and raising my arms up over my head, think nothing of it.  I don’t have turrets or anything, I’m simply making sure I haven’t had a stroke.

I’m not making fun, this is deadly serious.

I had previously read about three ways to tell if someone has suffered a stroke.  Ask them to smile (apparently they can’t if it’s a stroke); ask them to raise both arms; and ask them to speak a simple sentence such as “It’s a sunny day.”  If they’re unable to perform these simple tasks, you’d better get the person to the emergency room pronto!

Now we have a fourth test – ask them to stick out their tongue, if it’s crooked or goes to one side, it may indicate a stroke.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
