Readers help out with Hidden Valley copycat recipe

Cynthia Cross and Ann Gilbert wrote to let me know Wal-Mart sells SACO Buttermilk Powder. Yippee.  Sorry Hidden Valley, I won’t be buying your expensive dressing mix any longer.

“It’s great for making biscuits and cornbread without having to buy a quart of buttermilk,” wrote Cynthia.

That makes me happy because I can’t tell you have many quarts of buttermilk have died in my fridge after I use the cup or so I need for a specific recipe.  Now I can keep it on hand in powdered form.  I did read it probably should be refrigerated after opening.

I’m including the full recipe for copycat Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix by Recipe Zaar now that I know I can purchase the dry buttermilk. I believe this recipe – which earned five stars from testers – is probably most similar to the real thang:

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend at high speed until smooth. If you want to use this to make salad dressing, combine 1 tablespoon mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup milk. Otherwise use 1 tablespoon in any recipe calling for an envelope of ranch dressing mix.
