Remembering Lawrence Welk

I’m pathetic. After completing my “to do”  list today, and cleaning out all the secretive corners of my house, I was ready for some well-earned relaxation.

So, at 7:30 p.m., I collapsed into my easy chair.  I turned on Educational TV, anticipating something funny like Hyacinth and Keeping up Appearances. Instead I  got a 50-year old rerun of Lawrence Welk.  What did he call it “the champagne something or other.”

Polka is not my thing, and tap dancing is a forgotten art.

But I watched, mesmerized by those days when we were entertained by such simple performances. No profanity, nudity, or political correctness.  No sarcasm or criticism. Just sweet harmony and love songs.

What happened to us?

  1. My Saturday nights are not complete without Lawrence Welk and all the wonderful memories he stirs in us! As you said—-a delightful sweet time! Of course, I do adore Hyacinth and As Time Goes By also. They are a welcome relief from most of what is on TV.

  2. Campagne Music I believe and Mother and Daddy encouraged us to watch Lawrence regularly. As with most homes of the times, if you had a TV, you only had one.
